One NZ has become the first telecommunications company globally to power a nationwide satellite text messaging service via SpaceX’s Starlink, marking a significant milestone for the company.
Expansion of Satellite-to-Cell Technology
Starlink has been making waves in the telecommunications industry with its innovative approach to providing connectivity services. The company has signed up partners in Canada, Australia, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile, partnering with T-Mobile in the US. This expansion demonstrates Starlink’s commitment to providing global coverage and bridging the gap between rural and urban areas.
Limitations of Initial Rollout
While this achievement is a significant milestone, it’s essential to note that there are some limitations to the initial rollout. Currently, only four phone models are supported: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and OPPO Find X8 Pro. Eligibility is expected to expand to more devices next year.
Initial Service Capabilities
According to One NZ, most text messages can be sent and received within three minutes during the initial rollout. However, this time frame may increase to ’10 minutes or longer’ during the first few months. This is due to the ongoing testing of Starlink’s capabilities by One NZ.
"We continue to test the capabilities of One NZ Satellite TXT, and this is an initial service that will get better."
— Joe Goddard, Experience and Commercial Director at One NZ
The statement highlights the company’s commitment to continually improving the services provided. Text messages will take longer to send initially but are expected to become quicker over time.
Phased Rollout of Technology
One NZ has adopted a phased rollout approach for the Starlink technology. This means that only a small number of phones are currently supported as part of the initial launch. As the technology continues to develop, more devices and features will be added.
"We’re beginning with a small number of phones as part of the staggered rollout of the technology."
— Joe Goddard, Experience and Commercial Director at One NZ
This approach enables One NZ to refine their services and ensure that they meet the needs of their customers.
Future Developments
One NZ has outlined plans for future developments, including:
- Voice calling: This feature is expected to be available in the future.
- Data: Customers will also have access to data services through Starlink.
Pricing and Eligibility
Existing customers on paid-monthly plans can use the One NZ Satellite TXT service free of charge. However, it’s unclear whether new customers or those on other contracts will need to pay an additional fee to access satellite-to-cell coverage.
Benefits of One NZ Satellite TXT
The benefits of using One NZ Satellite TXT include:
- Reliability: The service is designed to be reliable and accessible even in areas with limited connectivity.
- Convenience: Customers can send and receive text messages without the need for traditional cell towers.
- Cost-effectiveness: Existing customers on paid-monthly plans can use the service free of charge.
Piloting Starlink’s Text-by-Satellite Service
Starlink previously piloted its text-by-satellite service with T-Mobile customers in areas affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in October. The pilot was successful, and T-Mobile has since been granted FCC approval for the service.
"We expect voice calling and data to also be available."
— Joe Goddard, Experience and Commercial Director at One NZ
The statement highlights the company’s commitment to continually improving the services provided through Starlink.
